Knowing how many rolls of wallpaper you need is essential for any successful wallpapering project. Accurate measurement of all surfaces to be covered is crucial. If you miscalculate or order too little, you may need to buy more rolls later—risking that your original batch number is no longer available.
You can easily calculate the required number of rolls using our wallpaper roll calculator, available at the top of every product detail page. Simply measure the width and height of each wall you plan to wallpaper, add those areas together, and include about 5 cm (2 inches) extra to the room height for trimming and pattern matching. We recommend ordering 1–2 extra rolls beyond your calculation. This allows for cutting or installation errors and ensures you have matching rolls for future repairs.
If you prefer to calculate your wallpaper needs manually, start by measuring the room height and the total perimeter (the combined length of all walls). Subtract the width of doors, but for windows, only subtract the glass area—not the window recess, which must be included.
Example:
Room perimeter: 16 m
Room height: 2.50 m
Roll width: 0.53 m
Roll length: 10 m
((16 ÷ 0.53) × 2.50) ÷ 10
(30.19 × 2.50) ÷ 10
75.48 ÷ 10 = 7.5 rolls
Always round up to the next whole number and add 1–2 spare rolls for safety.
A simpler, but still reliable, method is to calculate using square meters:
Example:
16 m × 2.50 m = 40 m²
40 ÷ 5 = 8 rolls
This rule of thumb works well for plain or small-patterned wallpapers, where there’s minimal waste. For these, just add 10% to your result and round up.
For large-patterned wallpapers that require precise pattern matching, expect more waste—sometimes up to a full strip per roll. Accurate measurement is especially important here. For complicated rooms with lots of corners or for expensive, high-end wallpapers, it’s best to consult a professional to ensure nothing goes wrong with your calculations.
